CLICK TO REGISTER
We are excited to announce Cunning Folk Center’s expanding FILM PROGRAM FOR TEENS and what it has to offer participants as we move forward. Our program provides a framework for understanding and engaging in discussions about film while students build a film language. As students progress through the program, they will learn the tools necessary to bring a creative idea to the screen. They will learn the  dramatic writing skills necessary to create compelling plots and dynamic characters, acting and directing actors, cinematography, set design, production and post-production.

Weekly classes will meet in Downtown Nevada City. Most of the weeks will be group sessions, although there will be one-on-one sessions as well, giving each student the opportunity to have a more individualized program based on their level of experience, interests and goals. Classes meet weekly, and enrollment is open and revolving.

The program
is taught by award-winning screenwriter, director and actor, William Paul Smith, Cunning Folk Center Instructors and guest lecturers. We are beginning the new sign-up period, and we look forward to seeing you move through our program and watching you grow as filmmakers.

The following are the primary areas of study that will be addressed throughout the program. The longer the student remains in the program, the further they will delve into the full curriculum.

INTRODUCTION TO CINEMA

The initial stages of the program are focused on an introduction to cinema. It is designed for students to workshop their ideas, learn how to watch and discuss film, and to gain tools in close reading and critical analysis. It will give students an opportunity to gain the necessary tools for successful filmmaking, while they are introduced to film techniques, cinematography, editing and all other stages of the filmmaking process anchored in film history.

SCREENWRITING

Students will learn the basic tools necessary to write a screenplay. We will unpack techniques in screenwriting and look at what makes a story cinematic, and how to define what drives our films. The class will cover story elements and techniques, character/dialogue, plot/tone, and genre/format. Each student will pitch three story ideas, the most promising stories will be selected to develop during the class. As students put their images and ideas down on page and the voices of their characters come to life, they will learn industry standard screenplay format to create our draft of their screenplay. Students will be given feedback from our staff and from their peers as they  learn the importance of rewrites.

ACTING AND DIRECTING ACTORS

Students will learn how to work with actors, including staging, communication, and what it means to rehearse. Students will learn how to stage actors, how to communicate with an actor, and what it means to rehearse. In addition understanding how direct the actor, students will have the opportunity learn a the tools of professional acting from an experienced actor. This is a unique opportunity in a film program, but we view it as necessary part of the process to help bring your characters to life. This includes techniques for the study of movement, working with props and how an actor breaks down a script. Scene study, improv, and on-camera performance will be a part of the program.

PRODUCING AND PRODUCTION

Students will learn fundamentals of lighting and cinematography. The will also explore the processes of casting, auditioning actors, set design, props, staging, and further camera work while using the foundations learned earlier in the course. We will be holding SKYPE sessions with industry professionals for further examination of these individual areas.
